Ernie Weir insists he is a wine grower, not just a winemaker, and after more than five decades in Napa Valley he has earned the distinction. My April column is built on a long conversation with the founder of Hagafen Cellars, the only fully dedicated kosher winery in Napa and one of the most consequential figures in American kosher wine.
When Hagafen started, sweet Manischewitz was the norm for kosher wine. Weir's mission was simply to make great Napa wine that also happens to be kosher, and his wines have since been poured at White House state dinners across several administrations. Now approaching his 52nd vintage, he talks about the state of the market and, with a wry shrug, about what comes next for the winery.
